Reception

Even as a huge fan of the series, it's difficult to thoroughly enjoy Wonder Boy in Monster Land in this day and age.

"Just a regular boy."

SEGa Ages keeps bringing ports of the old classics. This time it's Wonder Boy, an incredibly difficult platformer but a fun one at that. The game comes as a perfect port that includes bugs and glitches of the original. So you get the good and the bad.

It’s nice to see another relatively uncommon Sega game getting the Sega Ages treatment, but while it’s still perfectly playable after more than three decades, the arcade version of Monster Land suffers from frustrating combat and a general lack of spark.

Wonder Boy: Monster Land is ultimately a weird deep cut for Sega Ages, but it is one I'm glad exists. I'd never seen the arcade version of this game, and I always ignored the console re-releases previously. That said, this is a very enjoyable old-school platformer that is charming enough to warrant some attention more than 30 years later.
