Romancing SaGa 3 is still best played on original hardware. This new version’s updates are not worth the outrageous asking price from Square Enix. Despite the shortcomings of this “enhanced port,” this is still a highly recommended JRPG; so long as you are willing to take the time to understand how it works.

Overview

Romancing SaGa is set in the fictional world of Mardias, which was created by the God Marda. Long ago, war raged between three wicked gods, Death, Saruin, and Schirach, and the lord of all gods, Elore. At the end of that long conflict, Death and Schirach were stripped of their powers, and Saruin was imprisoned through the might of the ten Fatestones and the hero Mirsa's ultimate sacrifice. A millennium had passed, and the Fatestones were scattered throughout Mardias. All this time the powers of evil festered, bent on releasing Saruin from his prison.

The new UI is ugly as sin, and the animation added to the boss sprites is laughably out of place. The new background art is a mixed bag of some decent work and a couple examples of soulless imitation that fails to capture the intent of the original. Fans of old-school RPGs who love open-ended campaigns will have a fantastic time with Romancing SaGa 3.
Romancing SaGa 3 is an interesting work of the last century. The gameplay offers freedom like no other game from 90s. The visual and sound style of the remastered gives the title a second life. However, the history is a disappointment that offers interesting concepts, but at the end of the day, it does not achieve something memorable.
Europe has been waiting 24 years for a playable version of Romancing SaGa 3, and the wait is finally over: what we have is a unique and challenging RPG, which is worth to be played even today, even if for a hefty price.
