"Nighthawks is the brand new urban fantasy RPG from Wadjet Eye Games (The Blackwell Legacy, Unavowed, Technobabylon) and writer/designer Richard Cobbett (Sunless Sea/Sunless Skies, The Long Journey Home)."
"Nighthawks is a mix of story-driven RPG and undead life-simulation, where every decision you make is another move in your chess game against the world. Invest your time into learning new skills or honing your fighting style as you uncover the city's mysteries and venture deep into its darkest secrets. Gather fellow outcasts to your side, binding them with favours and choosing when to cash in. Manage your eternal thirst, legitimately, or balancing the risks of being caught stalking unwary victims and working the black markets."
The long wait has paid off, and Nighthawks is one of the most remarkable indie experiences of the year. It takes a fairly original approach to vampire fiction, showing us that humans and vampires can coexist in the same world without their relationship having to revolve solely around hunting and persecution.
Nighthawks has plenty about it, including a number of excellent side stories, but is dragged down by RPG mechanics that didn't do enough to make me properly commit to the idea of role-playing my vampire.
Nighthawks has some pretty noticeable stumbles. The story hits dead ends way too often and can often feel like you are solving another case to figure out how to move on to the next portion. Similarly, progressing states is a mystery unto itself that can take a pretty hefty amount of time to start pushing forward. Where the game succeeds, it does so...
Kickstarted back in 2018, it may have taken eight years for Nighthawks to crawl out of its coffin, but it was worth the wait. Enthralling, entertaining and with rich, razor-sharp writing, if you have even the slightest interest in vampires or the supernatural, you'll want to sink your teeth into this gothic gem.
It certainly took its time coming out, but vampire-centric tabletop-ish adventure game Nighthawks was certainly worth the wait.
